How to Choose Your First Camino Route

Start with the time you have

Your available days are the clearest starting point. The full Camino Francés often needs four to five weeks, while the Camino Portugués from Porto can fit into roughly two weeks. Shorter final sections are possible on every route.

Match the route to your experience

  • Camino Francés: the broadest accommodation network and a sociable atmosphere.
  • Camino Portugués: a practical first Camino with coastal and central options.
  • Camino del Norte: longer stages, frequent climbing, and dramatic coastal scenery.
  • Camino Primitivo: a shorter but demanding mountain route.

Consider the season

Heat, rain, daylight, and accommodation availability can change the experience significantly. Check current local information before setting out.

Choose for yourself

The best route is the one that matches your time, fitness, budget, and preferred level of company. These comparisons are general guidance rather than a guarantee of trail conditions.
