Essential Camino packing list: How to carry under 7 kg
On the Camino de Santiago, every extra gram in your pack multiplies over every kilometer walked. The golden rule recommended by pilgrim associations is that your fully loaded backpack (excluding water and snacks) should not exceed 10% of your body weight. Overweight packs are the primary cause of blisters, knee pain, and inflamed feet.
Selecting your pack and footwear
Your backpack and footwear form the core foundation of your setup. The ideal pack has a capacity between 30 and 40 liters and must feature a sturdy hip belt capable of transferring 80% of the weight from your shoulders directly to your hips.
When it comes to shoes, avoid heavy, rigid high-cut mountaineering boots unless walking in winter conditions. Trail running shoes or lightweight low-cut hiking shoes—sized a half to full size larger than your usual fit to accommodate swelling—are the top choice. Ensure your shoes are thoroughly broken in with at least 50–100 km of walking before your trip.
The rule of three (clothing system)
You do not need a fresh outfit for every day. One set is worn, one set is drying on your pack after evening laundry, and one set remains clean in reserve.
- 3 pairs of technical hiking socks (Merino wool or anti-friction blends).
- 3 pairs of quick-dry synthetic underwear.
- 2 breathable technical t-shirts.
- 1 pair of convertible hiking pants.
- 1 lightweight fleece or synthetic down jacket for chilly mornings/evenings.
- 1 high-quality rain poncho that covers both you and your pack.
Foot care kit
Your first-aid focus should be entirely on foot care. Pack sterile needles and thread (the traditional method for draining blisters), hydrocolloid blister plasters (Compeed), anti-friction cream or Vaseline (applied liberally before walking each morning), and a small antiseptic bottle.
